Biometric Cards

ID cards are due to be rolled out later this year. Existing data held by the Government, such as photographs, signatures and PPS numbers will be used to create the cards. The cards will have the capacity to carry fingerprints and eye scans. Oddly enough it is not intended as a National identity card. It seems that there is no legislation in place to introduce National identity cards.

The benefits of such a card are obvious but the downside is that every official record can be put on such a card from blood type to your leaving cert results. The type of cross-referencing that can be done with details such as can be put on a card such as this is what scares some people. It is easy to dismiss them as paranoid, if you have nothing to hide, why should you be afraid? The minority that will oppose these cards will make their points heard and they will carry some weight as well.

But what if we have a paranoid government?
